6th Grade


The Diocese of Arlington's Technology Standards were revamped for the 2015-2016 school year and they encompass:

  • Technology Systems (Use It)
    • Develop foundations in the understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations.

  • Digital Citizenship (Protect It)
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the history of technology and its impact on society. Practice ethical, legal, and responsible use of technology.

  • Research and Information Management (Find and Organize It)
    • Use digital tools to locate, gather, evaluate, and organize information and data.

  • Learning, Collaboration, and Problem Solving (Solve It)
    • Use a variety of technologies to support and enhance learning, encourage collaboration, increase productivity, and solve problems.

  • Communication and Creativity/Innovation (Create and Communicate It)
    • Use technology for communication, creative thinking, and developing innovative products using various media formats.


The students will be growing and strengthening their technology skills in these areas, as they complete assignments and projects created in support of the Diocesan curriculum in the various content areas.

  • Using Sketch-up to draw your house (or part of it) as a 3D model
The Steps to Getting it Done
  1. Measure your home:
    1. Use a piece of graph paper to sketch the outside shape of your home.
    2. Use a tape measure to measure all of the sides of your home and write them on your sketch
    3. Measure the size of each of the inside rooms.
    4. You may use a set of house plans for your home to get the measurements, but you must sketch the house yourself.
    5. If your house has more than one floor (basement & main...) you may just do the main floor. See the chart below for the required rooms.
    6. You need to locate each door and window on your sketch.
    7. Look at the example sketch to see how to draw the elements.
    8. Examine the outside of your home so you can duplicate what it looks like.
    9. Pay attention to closets, their locations and sizes.
    10. Save your sketch to turn in at the end of the unit.
    11. When your sketch has all the required elements and measurements go to BUILD YOUR HOME IN 3D

    4. Include windows and door openings

    7. Do not attempt to draw a roof unless you can group it so it can be moved away from the house for grading.
    8. Print the best view of your house at the end of each period to document your work
  • 4 -- Grade your project
    • Use this Rubric to fill out on the computer using WORD
    • Print this Rubric to fill out by hand on paper
    • Look at the requirement on the rubric and grade yourself with an appropriate number in the appropriate column. Be honest in your self-assessment. Add up your totals. When you have completed your assessment give it to the teacher for his assessment. Include the sketch you did of your house.

ü Gmail account: Because of the extensive use of Google Classroom, a gmail created and approved by parents is required as most of the online technology tools require an email account. It is highly recommended that this is a must so as not to delay the students doing online works or projects.
Class Description
This is a computer lab based program. Each lesson will begin with the teacher modeling a skill or task for you and then you will be asked to replicate that skill. At this point the expectations for the class will be announced. Please make sure you listen (and pay attention) to these first ten minutes of class. The classroom is organized into acceptable lab configuration. I provide an LCD projected image of my laptop to help you visually understand the lessons. Students are to be seated in the same seats throughout the year. Students will be repositioned according to the needs of the teacher.
Grading
I will follow the student handbook
  • Test will count 40% of the students grade
  • Quizzes count 35% of the students grade
  • Homework counts 25% of the students grade
Forms of Assessment
Part of the assessment is typing test and we will follow the diocesan requirement. Projects, always a big chunk of the grade; quizzes (mostly online); activities and projects; homework and participation in class. All rubrics provided as posted at the teacher’s homepage and at class Edmodo.

We will follow the Aquinas Handbook as recommended.
Make-Up Tests
Make up tests should be scheduled upon the students return to school.
Preparation for Class
Students will receive notice at the Teacher’s Homepage and at class Edmodo and that include topics to be studied and assignments. Each student is responsible for arriving to class, with all materials and in their seat on time.
Homework
Work submitted on time will receive full credit. The Aquinas Handbook states that work submitted on time receives up to a 100% credit, a day late receives up to 50% credit, and any time after a day will receive a zero.
